I always had this vision of having young kids and being able to fool them time and time again but Alexandra is not your average foolable child. It's a tad dissapointing of course to struggle to fool a three year old but it does make for some very funny moments. Here are a few:
A few days ago we were all driving in the pooring rain on the highway and Alexandra was complaining that she didn't like the rain on the car (it was raining really hard) so Dad says "I'll make it stop for a few seconds, just let me concentrate" then just as we're about to go under a short bridge he says "It will stop.... Now!..... ok all done. Phew, that takes a lot of concentration". Of course Alexandra says " Do it again Dad!" so as another bridge comes, he does it again. We then encourage Alexandra to try and after a few seconds of looking very concentrated she says "It doesn't work. I'll have to wait until we get to a bridge". Smart kid.
Another classic is the look away and I'll take your dessert. In our case it was the look away and take away the Trick or Treat bag that she picks her dessert from. Dad gets her to look outside and as she turns around she doesn't see her bag. This doesn't phase her for a second. She looks around and says "Dad... why did you put it there??"
Of course with this realism we're skirting a dangerous topic when it comes to Santa because she asks many questions about the logistics of how this whole night works. She's been hounding me about how he knows when kids are sleeping. I finally told her there was a light on the roof that goes on when kids fall asleep. We'll see how long that lasts.
On the flip side she has no doubt there is something known as "the pick up fairy" who takes any toys that haven't been put away and Muisje Albertje who lives in our house and sneaks bites of cake, candy and any other delicious food that might be laying out.
